Avoiding Harsh Chemicals on Quartz Countertops
Tip: Quartz countertops should not be treated with harsh chemicals such as ammonia or bleach. These have the ability to sever the resin’s link with the quartz.
Why Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Natural quartz crystals joined by colors and resin make up quartz countertops. Quartz is strong and resilient by nature, but the glue that binds it together may be harmed by strong chemicals. Using these substances may result in a number of problems:
- Damage to Resin: Strong chemicals such as ammonia and bleach can damage the bonding in the resin, causing discoloration or surface deterioration.
- Loss of Shine: Regular use of caustic or abrasive cleansers can dull the countertop’s gloss, giving it a worn-out, unappealing appearance.
- Etching and Staining: Etching is a chemical reaction that results in difficult-to-remove stains or dull patches.
Chemicals to Avoid
- Bleach: may deteriorate the resin and result in discoloration.
- Ammonia: can weaken the resin’s surface and produce dullness.
- Vinegar: The acidity of it can cause surface etching.
- Lemon Juice: Its acidity can eventually cause damage, just like vinegar.
- Abrasive Cleaners: Abrasive powders or pads have the potential to scratch the surface.
- Oil-Based Soaps: can leave a residue behind that draws filth and debris.
Safe Cleaning Alternatives
- Mild Dish Soap and Water:
- For everyday cleaning, a solution of warm water and mild dish soap works well. After applying the solution and wiping clean the surface, use a soft cloth or sponge.
- Quartz-Specific Cleaners:
- Certain cleansers are made especially for surfaces made of quartz. These are made to clean well without causing any harm to the surface or resin.
- Isopropyl Alcohol Solution:
- A 70% isopropyl alcohol and water solution can be used for disinfection. After a few minutes of light spraying, use a gentle cloth to wipe the surface clean.
- Baking Soda Paste:
- A mixture of baking soda and water can be gently applied for more stubborn stains. After a few minutes, let it sit before cleaning it with a moist cloth.
Steps for Safe Cleaning
- Prepare the Cleaning Solution:
- In a bowl or spray bottle, combine a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water.
- Apply the Solution:
- Apply the solution to the countertop by spraying it on or wiping the surface with a delicate cloth dipped in the solution and wrung off.
- Wipe and Rinse:
- Using the sponge or soapy cloth, carefully wipe the countertop, taking care to remove any stains or spills. To get rid of any soap residue, rinse the cloth or sponge with fresh water and wipe the area once more.
- Dry the Surface:
- Make sure there are no water stains or streaks on the countertop by wiping it down with a soft, dry cloth.
